NKDEP Makes National Connections at the 2011 Tom Joyner Family Reunion

Each year offers NKDEP a new challenge: how do we encourage people most at risk for kidney disease to get tested and for them to share the information with their families. For the last three years, an important factor in meeting that challenge has been NKDEP’s exhibit at the annual Tom Joyner Family Reunion in Orlando, Florida. The action-packed weekend is an opportunity to distribute NKDEP’s free materials and meet people who are family and community health champions.

This Labor Day weekend, NKDEP attended this gathering of more than 6,000 families to share important kidney health materials and get families thinking about what they can do for their kidney health. As in years past, the Tom Joyner Family Reunion was a great success for NKDEP. We spoke to thousands of attendees and empowered them to help their family and community Make the Kidney Connection.

This month we’re bringing a piece of the NKDEP exhibit to you with a testimonial from a Tom Joyner Family Reunion attendee.

Gaye Castell of Orlando, Fla. received a bag of NKDEP materials that included the Kidney Sundays Toolkit, Family Reunion Guide, and additional materials to get her family smart about their risk for kidney disease:
